Who is responsible
A product covered by the GPSR cannot be placed on the EU market without a responsible economic operator established in the EU (Art. 16). If you buy directly from a factory and sell in the EU, you are usually the importer, with the duties set out in Art. 11. The European Commission’s guidelines (C/2025/6233) state that the importer’s name and address must be on the product.
Your own brand makes you the manufacturer
Under Art. 13, a company that places a product on the market under its own name or trademark is treated as the manufacturer. This is easy to miss when you start a private label. Your contract with the importer should state who does what.
What goes on the product or packaging
- Manufacturer’s name or trademark, with postal and electronic address
- Importer’s name and address if the manufacturer is outside the EU
- Type, batch or serial number
- Warnings and safety information in the language of the country of sale
What goes in an online listing
Art. 19 sets out what an online offer has to show: the manufacturer’s details, the responsible person in the EU if the manufacturer is outside it, information to identify the product, and warnings. Have this ready for each listing. Marketplaces ask sellers for GPSR data, and each has its own form and process, so check yours.
Where the GPSR steps back
Where a product has its own EU safety rules, the GPSR applies only to the aspects those rules do not cover (Art. 2). Gas appliances, batteries and food-contact materials have specific laws of their own. Tents, sleeping bags, chairs and hammocks mostly rely on the GPSR itself, with EN and EN ISO standards as voluntary references.
Category rules on top
- Cookware, flasks, mugs: Regulation (EC) 1935/2004, and (EU) 10/2011 for plastics
- Batteries, power stations: Regulation (EU) 2023/1542
- Gas appliances: Regulation (EU) 2016/426
- Packaging: Regulation (EU) 2025/40, since 12 August 2026, plus national registrations
Checklist before you list a product
- EU responsible operator named on the label and in the listing
- Batch or model number on the product
- Safety information in the local language
- Instructions and warnings for set-up, loads and fire risks
- Declarations and test reports filed where the category needs them
- A way to record complaints and trace a batch
When you buy through CampIQ, we are the importer and prepare the labels. For the UK, note that it has its own regime and the EU’s GPSR does not apply there directly.
